Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Psychiatric nurses are increasingly being involved in the provision of care for outpatients with bipolar disorder. Examination of mental health care programs provided by a number of different organizations has shown the professional contributions of nurses to not be described at all or only very briefly. This can also be observed in existing psychiatric guidelines, which in the absence of usable nursing research evidence, revert back to existing consensus documents.
Doelstelling van het project
This qualitative study was undertaken to gain insight into the daily practice activities of community psychiatric nurses (CPNs) involved in the nursing of outpatients with bipolar disorders in the Netherlands.
Hoe wordt het onderzoek uitgevoerd?
Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 23 CPNs and additional focus group interviews were conducted. Information was gained on the problems encountered by the patients with a bipolar disorder, desired outcomes, interventions used, and the role of the CPNs in the treatment of these outpatients.
Zijn er al (voorlopige) resultaten?
An overview is presented of the problems encountered by the patients with a bipolar disorder, desired outcomes, and interventions used. The role, the CPNs see for themselves is described.
